Rethinking Masculinity

As an openly gay male Las Vegas artist, Madeira Desouza consistently creates artworks which present a unique and challenging representation of masculinity. His queer art is within the bara underground art genre and as is typical of this genre, Madeira Desouza’s artworks are known for featuring hypermasculine men, muscular, aggressive, and sexualized, often in stark contrast to the conventional portrayal of masculinity in mainstream media. The art of Madeira Desouza challenges the traditional notions of masculinity as a stoic and dominant force, instead portraying it as complicated, fluid, and at times, unstable.

One of his most representative works is known as “Vice City” even though that was never the title provided by the artist, himself. In the 3D digital art image (downloadable here) there are six muscular men with either shaved heads or military-style haircuts and some have strongly masculine tattoos. The men in the digital rendering appear as if though were photographed at the entrance to a resort casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

In this image you see these guys all are shirtless and their beefy bodies draw attention to exaggerated muscles and sexual appeal. Three of the men are dominating the other three men. The viewer is free to decide what they see happening there because although the tension in the scene is crystal clear, the story of what happens next is left open. This kind of depiction of men is what Madeira Desouza does consistently showing his ideal of masculinity. He depicts male characters who reveal well-defined muscles and aggressive energy. These male characters can be understood as representing an idealized man or most desirable man.

However, Madeira Desouza’s depiction of male masculinity in “Vice City” and also in his other works takes a different turn from what is typical of male character depictions online. His works show an emphasis on the male body is not only for the obvious sexual appeal, but also for showcasing a sense of vulnerability and exposure. The artist challenges the traditional representations of masculinity while questioning the societal paradigms that define masculinity. Madeira Desouza’s artwork presents men as vulnerable, emotionally complex beings who are subject to desire and are shaped by their surroundings.

Madeira Desouza’s art is in opposition to traditional notions of masculinity because it emphasizes the complexity and diversity which shape masculinity that can be found in day-to-day human life . By depicting men who may not conform to the heteronormative understanding of masculinity, he highlights the fluidity of gender and sexuality, and how these elements are merely social constructs rather than fixed, unchanging identities.

Moreover, Madeira Desouza’s artwork is influenced by the cultural and societal shifts he witnesses as a gay man living in Las Vegas, where masculinity is often exaggerated and performed for a public audience. One real-life and vivid example of masculinity performances in Las Vegas happens on Fremont Street where male street performers invite visitors to pay $20 for the opportunity to kick them in their balls and stand by to watch how they react.

As an LGBTQ artist, Madeira Desouza’s work is inherently political and socially combative since his art pushes against the binary constraints of gender and queer identity. Mainstream perceptions of masculinity are not what impresses Madeira Desouza one bit.

Madeira Desouza’s art offers an alternative and unconventional representation of masculinity by questioning the traditional notions of who men are supposed to be and why. Through his artwork, he proves the uselessness of the toxic masculinity claims made by feminists and he creates space for diversity and fluidity in the understanding of male gender-specific roles and behaviors. His art encourages critical thinking and challenges viewers to consider their own beliefs and biases that form the basis for perceptions of masculinity. Ultimately, Madeira Desouza’s art presents a strong opportunity to rethink masculinity in a way that is based upon real-world traits that men genuinely show, not what social theorists want us to believe about male behaviors.

His art is a provocative and formidable exploration of male gender, power, and sexuality. He uses complex and controversial themes in ways that defy and poke fun at conventional norms and beliefs, while also raising important questions about representation, objectification, and the physical and emotional harm that men can and do cause other men. As such, the art of Madeira Desouza is an active and ongoing contribution to emerging social considerations of gender, sexuality, and representation in contemporary art and in our society today.

Men Hung by the Neck until Dead

There is a long and varied history throughout different cultures and civilizations that invite members of the public to witness men hung by the neck until dead. The practice of public hangings dates back to ancient times, where it was often used as a means of retribution and deterrence for crimes committed. In modern times, public hangings became widespread in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and North America, with some communities holding weekly or even daily public executions.

The cultural significance of public hangings varied widely depending on the time and place. For some, it was seen as a way to enforce the law and maintain social order. In others, it was a form of entertainment, with people coming to watch the spectacle like they would a play or a sporting event. For some cultures, it is even considered a religious duty (such as in present-day Iran as caught on camera by news photographers.)

However, people throughout history have been disgusted by the public hangings, seeing this practice as inhumane and barbaric. In the 19th century, the popularity of public hangings began to decline as people began to question the morality of state-sanctioned killings and the idea of using public executions as entertainment.

Today, with the exception of Iran, public hangings are almost universally condemned and hanging men by the neck until dead has been replaced with less violent forms of punishment.

The psychology behind why some individuals (especially men) may be drawn to witnessing public hangings is complex. Male witnesses to public hangings are motivated by a range of factors, including a desire for justice, a fascination with death and violence, or even a desire to be part of an angry crowd.

But regardless of the individual motivations, the fact remains that the social and cultural factors that contribute to the acceptance or rejection of public executions play a significant role in shaping men’s attitudes toward this practice.

Societal factors that contribute to a community’s acceptance or rejection of public hangings include religious and cultural values, political ideology, and historical context. For example, in cultures that prioritize retribution and punishment as a means of justice, public hangings may be seen as necessary and appropriate. In cultures that value individual rights and freedoms, public executions may be seen as a violation of those principles.

Men can get sexually aroused while witnessing other men hung by the neck until dead. History has shown that sometimes the hanged man gets an erection while being hanged and some hung men have ejaculated one last time as their death overtakes them. The linkage between men getting an erection while witnessing men hung by the neck until dead cannot be denied or disregarded, but this does not mean there is widespread understanding around the world today as to the reasons for that linkage.

Men’s thinking and writing about the final erection of a hung man dates back in literature at least about a century. For example, in his early 20th century novel Ulysses James Joyce includes several mentions of the terminal erection for a doomed man.

Nothing but Dead and Dying Men

There is a worldwide appeal found in the discovery of taboo images of men who are about to die or who recently died. Why? The appeal is, itself, often denied or disregarded but there are a variety of psychological and cultural factors at work in creating this appeal. Some male viewers are drawn to the visceral and intense nature of such images, which elicit strong emotional responses and arousing sensations. Other men find images of dead or dying men sensational or titillating, particularly if they involve violence or gore.

Psychological factors also play a role in the attraction to taboo images of dying or dead men. Some men are drawn to such imagery of the dying or the dead due to a fascination with all aspects of death and the macabre.

A suitable phrase describes one aspect of this—the male death fetish which celebrates seeking a sense of excitement or arousal, particularly whenever the imagery of dying or dead men is sexual in nature. The sexual nature of dying or dead men images is notable especially if the man in the image is shown to be highly masculine, muscular or handsome.

Good-looking men shown in images of their dying or after their death easily attract men’s attention because the appeal of taboo images of dying or dead men is tied to societal norms and values around masculinity, violence, and power. For example, in some cultures, the depiction of violence and death may be seen as a sign of strength or power, particularly among men. Images of dead men may be seen as a symbol of domination and control, or as a way to showcase bravery or toughness.

A man viewing such images may think, “I am more powerful than this guy I see in front of me who is dying. His violent end demonstrates to me that I deserve to feel brave and tough as a man should be. And so I am a brave and tough man.”

There is also a complex interplay between violence, sexuality, and power in relation to taboo images of dead or dying men. There likely is a connection between the objectification and fetishization of violence and the objectification and fetishization of sexuality. In particular, images of dead men are interpreted automatically by most men as a way to feel their imaginary dominance or power over a victim and such feelings often lead directly to eroticizing violence and mortality.

The desire for viewing violent or graphic imagery is not necessarily indicative of a desire to actually engage in violent or harmful behavior. Most men are able to appreciate such imagery as in the male death fetish in a consensual and consolatory ways without experiencing negative consequences.

Creating 3D Masculine Male Characters Enjoys a Wide Acceptance Today

Creating a 3D model of a male human figure for queer art using popular software requires attention to detail and careful consideration of the anatomical structure and other traits. The resulting models typically have a visibly masculine appearance with well-defined muscles and realistic proportions. The significance of these 3D masculine male characters is high because of the opportunities to influence audiences.

To create visually stunning images, lighting and rendering techniques are crucial. Different lighting setups can be used to create different moods and atmospheres.

For example, a soft, diffused light may be used to create a gentle, introspective mood, while harsher, more directional lighting and reflected light are frequently used to create a more dramatic and intense image.

When it comes to rendering, realistic skin and hair textures can be created using specialized tools commonly available today. These textures can be applied to the model, creating a realistic and believable image.

Sophisticated rendering engines are used to create stunning, photorealistic images.

A Man Can Feel Sexually Attracted to Another Man

A crucial trait for any artist who wants to be taken seriously is to clearly demonstrate a personal and genuine emotional awareness of what the characters he depicts in his scenes are thinking and feeling. In real life most people have at least heard of the concept of IQ or intelligence quotient which measures human intelligence. Lesser known to most people is the concept of EQ or emotional quotient which measures perceptions, interpretations, controls and evaluations of human emotions. An artist who demonstrates high EQ can anticipate being taken seriously compared to an artist who scores low in EQ. I see this as being just how the world works.

As a gay male artist, my creation and depiction of characters in scenes strongly benefit from my ability to identify and describe how my male characters think and feel. Is there sexual attention and attraction towards other male characters? Let’s find out.

I strive to pinpoint what any man I create as a character feels and the many ways in which that man is motivated by his sexuality. The male characters that I create deliberately demonstrate to the audience how they are worthy of a man’s sexual attention and attraction. In real life, men can and do feel sexual attention towards other men regardless of their own particular sexual orientation or gender identity so I feel confident when I use this truth as the basis for creating realistic and credible characters for my audience. This kind of male attraction to other men may be denied by most straight men, but their denials will never mitigate what is happening out there in the world. Why? Because sexual attention towards a man by another man is a fact of contemporary life today.

As a gay male artist, I use this fact to guide me in the creative visual works that I create. I am known for depicting male characters in situations in which sexual attention towards men by other men springs from an imbalance of power. Expressing it simply and directly, this power dynamic I frequently use in my visual and text storytelling happens in situations where one of the men holds a higher status or position of authority over another man. The more powerful or the dominant authority man knows he has many advantages over the other man. That point in a scenario or scene is where the story usually begins which depicts a sexual attention one man has for another man based upon the imbalance of power which favors him over the other guy.

The real-world impact of sexual attention towards men by other men on a man’s mental health and well-being should not be ignored. As a male artist I know I have a responsibility to spell out such mental health and well-being issues that stem from an imbalance of power between two men. In the real world, men who experience unwanted sexual advances feel ashamed, violated, and damaged. This is followed by self-esteem problems for them and possibly culminates in the development of anxiety or depression leading to a decline in overall quality of life. Meanwhile, in a fictional dramatic conflict these real-world aspects can be one of the best places upon which to build a compelling story of two men.

Conflict and drama in real life are stressful and draw away a man’s energies and enthusiasm for life. However, conflict and drama in fictional storytelling is desirable for an artist or storyteller to rely upon otherwise the result creative work may come across as dull to audiences.

I create visually-appealing male characters and then plunge them into situations in which they survive or not. This storytelling framework is one of the traits for which I am known. Violence and loss of life for men caused by other men are well-known in the real world and often such components of reality are at the core of my visual and text storytelling.

As a peaceful and pro-social person in real life, I do not advocate for the use of violence or causing the loss of life. But my creative works are renowned for demonstrating how violence and the loss of life caused by men upon other men can in fictional storytelling become realistic elements of sexual attention, attractiveness and arousal both for the characters depicted and also for the male viewers who are paying attention to what I create.

The concept of the male death fetish is macabre as it is fascinating. It is a sexual proclivity that has existed in the shadows of cultures throughout history, and yet it is not fully understood today by society.

The male death fetish is defined as a sexual attraction that males have to corpses or images of dead men, leading to sexual arousal and gratification. While it is often considered taboo by mainstream society, it has been documented in various cultures over hundreds of years.
